Boating on Forrest Lake

Neighbors of our cousins we are visiting took us out on the lake on their pontoon. First time we have been on a boat. It was fun and we even got to go into the water with Mom. The water felt cool. We had a big day and slept really good that night
We even served as lookouts for anything that might be of interest passing our way but most of the time we snoozed a bit. The gentle motion of the boat was really neat and very relaxing.

Minneapolis

Minneapolis and St Paul Minnesota. We posed with Mary Tyler Moore statue and saw all the skywalks. They would keep you warm during the cold winters, The capitol in St Paul was another place to visit
The large church is St Pauls down the street from the capitol. It can hold 3000 people.
We waited on the steps of the capitol with Mom's cousin while Mom and another cousin went inside. It was nice outside and for once we didn't have to wait in the car.

Cranberry fields

We were at cranberry fields in Wisconsin which is the largest producer of cranberries in the US.
We went to a museum and store where they even had cranberry treat especially for dogs. We didn't much like them, not as good as chicken and pumpkin. We saw a cranberry bog -and want to see it in the fall when they harvest them

We visited Amish country in Wisconsin. Didn't get our pictures taken with them as they don't like to have their pictures taken so Mom had to sneak a few. It was interesting but wish we could have run in those fields.

Soldiers and Sailors Monument 284 feet tall completed in 1902 to honor soldiers who died in the Civil War. Mom said we looked good with the monument in the background.

Benjamin Harrison Home in Indianapolis, 23rd President --sandwich president as he was between Pres Cleveland's 2 separate terms of office. When he was president, he authorized that flags be flown at all public schools and the Pledge of Allegiance was adopted

Legend has it that a Chickasaw chieftan, fearful of a white man's admiration for his lovely daughter brought his daughter to the Blowing Rock. One day she spied a Cherokee brave and soon the 2 were inseperable. The brave received a sign of trouble in his homeland and had to return. He leaped from the rock to the wilderness below.The maiden prayed everyday for his return until one day a gust of wind brought him back to the rock from the valley below. This is the explanation for the strange winds that blow here even causing snow to fall upside down

Court Square Fountain and White House of Confederacy

The first White House of the Confederacy. Presdent Jefferson Davis and his family lived here for 3 months before the capitol was moved to Richomond, VA. It was build in 1832-1835.

Court Squaqre Fountain built in 1885 and constructed over an exisying artesian basin and was the site of the trading post for the buying and selling of slaves before and during the Civil War. Two views of it. This one lookingat the Winter Building from where the telegram was sent from the Confederate Secretary of War authorizing the Confederate General (GEN Beauregard)to fire on Ft Sumter and the Civil War began.

Hank Williams landmarks around Montgomery

Hank Williams Museum-contains lots of goodies including the 1952 baby blue cadillac that he died in on 1 Jan 1953 in West Virginia on his way to perform in Canton, Ohio. There is also lots of suits, cowboy hats and boots, autographed record albums and furnsishing of his home.

Chris - a famous hot dog eatry. This is one of Hank Williams favorite places to eat. He would come in for one of thier famous hot dogs and a coke. They were good. Mom bought us each one but we didn't get the special sauce that goes with it. Mom says that is what makes it special.

Hank Williams statue looking across the street to the Montgomery Auditorium. His funeral was held here. 2500 inside the auditorium and another 28,000 in the park where his statue is now located. Stars of the Grand Old Opery were all in attendance and sank special songs.

Alabama Capitol Building

On the steps of the front of the capitol building. One of the few state capitol to be designated a National Historical Landmark.

The Alabama state captiol is a Greek revival structure with a 90 foot white dome. Constructed in 1851served as the ccapitol of the Confederacy during the first 3 months of the CIvil War. Jefferson Davis took the oath of office as President of the Confederacy on the front step. The articles of secession and the Constitution of the Confederacy were drafted in the old senate chamber. On these same steps is where Civil Rights March ended (Selma to Mongomery) and Dr Martin Luther King delivered a stirring speech.

We had to stop and visit the boyhood home of one of the all time great country western singers, Hank Williams

Margaret was our hostess and let us in the home. Mom even let us off the leash for a bit. We had the run of the place. Margaret was so nice to us.

We stopped in Monroeville., AL home of Harper Lee and Truman Capote. To Kill a Mockingbird was based on composites in and around Monroeville. The character, Dill, was based on Truman Capote who lived with his cousin during the summers next door to the Harper Lee family

Perdido Winery

Allie made a new friend, Lulu at the winery. Greys and Maltese's, a friendship made in heaven. So while Mom talked and drank wine, we bonded.

They asked so many questions about us and Mom answered all the inquiries. She sure likes to brag on us - how good we are and how we love to travel. On one of the cannons at FT Gaines, A Confederate fort built at the entrance to Mobile Bay to protect Mobile from Union forces. This is where ADM Farragut uttered the famous words, Dam the torpedoes, Full speed ahead. Farragut with his 18 ships were steaming forward when the lead ship, Tecumsah hit a torpedo, today a mine, and sank with 2 minutes killing 90 sailors. The ships behind were faltering when Farragut shouted his famous words. His ships rallied and the forts were forced to surrender thus giving the North the Confederate Fort. The sea behind us is where ADM Farragut ships were steaming from

Mom made us dress up in red coats with lights for the Chsristmas parade. At least she did not make us wear Santa hats or reindeer antlers. It was very majical since it was snowing

Humpback Bridge - one of 6 covered bridges still left in Virginia. This is pretty neat. The story behind covered bridges is that they were a great place for "courting" It was a good place to stop horse and buggy for a snuggle on a cool evening.

The first picture is of the statue of Secretariet, the middle picture is of Man of War, and the third is the entrance to the park. Man of War sired War Admiral who despite winning numerous races is best remembered for losing to Sea Busquit.

Kentucky is known for horses and bourbon, so of course we had to take a tour of a distillary. It was quite interesting. Even thought we don't like bourbon, Mom had to have a taste and she has decided to stick with wine. Bufallo Trace is located on the crosssroads of where the buffalo would travel to water and grass. This distillary was one of 4 to continue to operate even during prohibition. It was granted a special license to continue to make bourbon for medicinal purposes, and doctors would write prescriptons for bourbon use.

St Louis Gateway Arch

The Gateway Arch in St Louis.overlooking the Mississippi River. The arch is the tallest National Monument in the US standing at 630 feet. It was constructed between 1963 and 1965. There is a wonderful musuem, The Museum of Westward Expansion, below ground and tells the history of the westward movement. Mom always manages to find us grass and a closed in space to run and get some exercise. We are at the far end of the arch.

Hermann, Missouri, a large German Community located on the Missouri River. Lewis and Clark passed by here in May of 1804. Can just imagine them paddling upstream and coming ashore to explore and trade with the Indians and fur trappers.

Jefferson City, capitol of Missouri. We are standing in front of Lewis and Clark Statue located on the side of the capitol. Thomas Jefferson is in the front entrance of the building. The captiol was completed in 1918. It is 238 feet tall and a bronze statue of Ceres, the goddess of vegetation is on top of the dome. More great grass to roll around on.

We are at Osage Beach, one of the many lakeshore communities that are all around the lake. The lake is large and beautiful.covering 17,626 acres and has over 1100 miles of shoreline.

We are in the Kansas Flint Hills, rolling hills that lead unto the prairie. They are beautiful and we think what fun it would be to run up and down them. Too bad all the areas we saw that were fenced had cows in them. But hey, bet we could outrun a cow.
We are headed to Missouri.

Little Sweeden

Dala Horses in Linsborg, Kansas. Linsborg is know as Little Sweeden. The Dala horse has become the unoffiical emblem of Sweeden. There are horses all over town. Wonder if they would make a DALA GREYHOUND. Now wouldn't that be COOOL.

Eisenhower Presidential Musuem and Library are in Ablene. The chapel is where he and Mamie are buried. Very interesting.

Old Abelene, the town too tough to die. Abelene was at the end of the Chilsom Trail where thousands head of beef from Texas were brought to the railheads for shipment back East

Wild Bill Hickock was marshall and brought law and order to the west.

Getting ready to visit the Greyhound Hall of Fame in Abilene, Kansas
The Hall of Fame showcases the history of us greys, life on a kennel farm and at the track. All the race tracks are showcased. There is a special exhibit on all the big money winners. Lots of artwork and sculptures. Really really fun to look at our hertiage.
The entrance to the Hall of Fame. So much to absorb and for once we get to go in. We greys are more than welcome to stroll the exhibit areas. There are 2 resident greys and they made us feel welcome.

The Oregon Trail-Alcoa Springs

We are on the Oregon Trail. If you listen real close, you can almost hear the sounds of the wagons rolling thru the tall grass. It is tall and hard walking

Prairie Grass In Southern Nebraska

The Homestead National Monumment honors the thousands of homesteaders that turned vast frontiers into farms, towns and truly developing Mid-America. My ancestors homesteaded in SE North Dakota in 1883. The first homestead was granted in Nebraska in 1863 and the last in 1988 to an individual in Alaska.

Our first thought was how hard it would be to plow this tall grass. It was hard enough to walk thru it but to plow it up to plant crops would be really hard work.

Ft Kearney

Ft Kearney was established by the gov in 1848 and disestablished in 1871. It's purpose was to aid travlers in their overland quest of new opportunities in the west. The first major place where the wagon trains could resupply. We are inside the fort. It was enclosed, we were the only ones there, and we could run. What a grand place to cut loose and run free.

We are standing in the location of the Commanding Officers Quarters of the fort. Of course we had to have our pictures taken there

Pirates of Panzance

Now everyone knows I am a history buff and try to learn as much about the area as I can. Council Bluffs/Omaha was no exception. Well, while touring and taking pictures, a couple stopped me-they said it looked like I knew what I was doing.

I gave them the history tour of the area for 3 hours and took them to all the sites that I knew of. ( I have been touring here 3 days) Turns out they were cast members of the operetta Pirates of Penzance. In gratitude they gave me 2 tickets-orchestra level-for my friend and myself to the operetta. It was wonderful. They played Ruth and Major General(2 main parts) Who says being a tour guide does not pay. The play was in the OLD Orpheum, a beautiful restored theater. The girls stayed home curled up on the couch.

Today off to Western Nebraska to where three trails converged-Oregon, California, Pony Express-Kearney, Nebraska. This is the Great Platte River Archway that crosses I 80. A great musuem. I-80 follows the paths of the Oregon and California trails

we are a hit wher ever we go. We are surrounded by a group of preschool tykes. Loved all that petting. Everywhere we go, folks are fascinated by us - and ask lots of questions. Mom tells them all about us greys In fact we are holding our very own meet and greets all around the USA

Mom decided to leave us at home for the day so she could spend some time with cousin Susan. We would have had to stay in the car so much better. So here are the cousins, Judy and Susan, at the Sunken Gardens in Lincoln Nebraska.
Found them quite by accident as were trying to find I 80 to get home, made a wrong turn and there they were. Beautiful. Susan knew more flowers than Judy did.
